The Gift

The gift of anointing plain language
Retracts itself. What I mean to say is
the one who spoke desired words from
her lips to become a creed

I call a gift. This allowing another
to believe she has fulfilled
what she has not fulfilled. It is you
who have filled in blanks and beautifully,

calling what is now there her gift. Except
it is your gift to her, this pretense.
Different from what a teacher would guide.
Different from a wise prophet demanding

Clarity. Listening and refining
rather that investing in this currency
the cabal mutually applies,
is applied by conferring and accepting,

as if a bargain no one speaks about.
An agreement to deliver and receive
this absence handed over and taken.
This form of a communion.
