Time to Face (after Wayne Hogan)

It's time to face the flowers that don't
Require a face. Yet a face is all you have
So face it: Not many flowers seem
To be looking at you with regard. So what?

Each of the insistent blooms is busy
Rowdy-ing upward into independent
Living, poking up toward the sun,
One source of nourishment alongside

Beautiful bumblebees vibrating bodies
To release the pollen before combing it
Into little baskets on its legs.
Likewise hoverflies travel to pollinate

Delicate flora. Honeybees and wasps
As well as night moths seeking scented flowers.
Butterflies and beetles resist light
Pollution to perform. I wonder

Does the human face play a role? Do flowers
Warm to a human pair of eyes that brightly
Offer a painted-looking smile that
Overlooks these miniature lives?
